The incident took place in Bristol on Thursday, Jan. 12 following the carjacking of a Toyota at knifepoint in Farmington.
The suspect in the Farmington carjacking had earlier carjacked another car in Hartford. Bristol officers located the stolen Toyota in the area of Quaker Lane, in Bristol, the Inspector General's office said.
The driver of the stolen car, Jimmie Shoemaker Gonzalez, age 39, address unknown, abandoned the car and fled on foot. Police chased him, and during the chase, Gonzalez entered a Bristol police vehicle and started to drive away, officials said.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., Bristol Police officer Seth Petzing fired multiple shots at the fleeing vehicle. At least one shot struck Shoe-maker Gonzalez in the leg, the Inspector General's Office said.
Shoemaker-Gonzalez drove away from the area and proceeded for a distance of approximately two miles before crashing the police car into Palma's Diner on Stafford Ave.
On the bodycam video worn by Petzing, he can be seen aiming his gun before firing as other officers yelled "freeze," as he keeps driving away.
Shoemaker-Gonzalez was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree larceny and held on $1 million bond, the Bristol Police Department said.
Connecticut State Police are assisting the state Inspector General's Office in the investigation.
